Der Mars sollte durch ein sogenanntes "Terraforming" in einen für Menschen bewohnbaren Raum verwandelt werden. Dazu wurden die Polkappen geschmolzen und der Atmosphäre langsam lebenswichtige Gase hinzugefügt. Jedoch lief der Schmelzvorgang schief, sodass nun der ganze Planet mit Wasser bedeckt ist. Die Menschen leben daher auf schwimmenden Inseln und in U-Booten.
